Planning for a storytelling festival to be held in Newport County began in
1997. The Newport Library was the initial planner. Storytellers,
Librarians and staff from the Newport County Convention & Visitor's bureau
joined in and began to meet in 1998 to make this dream a reality. In
October of 1999 we presented "Stories for the Harvest Moon", on two
separate dates and at two separate locations.

Our very first Rhode Island Storytelling Festival took place in November
of 2000. We had three performances, one in each town on Aquidneck Island
(the original Rhode Island in the state name). Every year since that time
the festival has taken place in early November.

We are grateful to the many sponsors who have supported this event over the
years: The Newport Public LIbrary, FNZ Foundation, Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, People's Bank, North CharitableTrust, Rhode Island Foundation, Newport Arts Alliance,
Newport Convention & Visitor's Bureau, Newport Recreation Department,
Museum of Newport History, The Norman Bird Sanctuary,
Sullivan School Family Center and the City of Newport.
